8. Leading in Crisis, A Conversation about Race in Business

This is the last episode in this "Leading in Crisis" series and I'm taking this opportunity to talk about the racial injustices that have resurfaced to headlines upon the George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery deaths, amongst countless others. Leaders, it’s about time to end the silence. How does race play a significant role in business and on our teams? What can we do? Where do we begin? Let’s talk about it.

We need to change how our behavior so that others will see that racism is not to be tolerated.

Topics you will learn in this episode:

[00:01 - 02:22] Racial Injustices and Equality

  • I talk about what’s been going on recently with racial injustices and equality.
    • Protests in all 50 states due to the horrific death of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and many other African American victims due to racism
  • What can we do to solve these racial injustices and equality issues?

[02:23 - 05:57] What can you do on a micro-level?

  •  Start a conversation with someone that does not look like you and ask these types of questions:
    • 1. Where did you grow up?
    • 2. What was that like?
    • 3. What did you experience?
    • 4. How did that shape you?
    • 5. What can I do to help you?

[05:58 - 10:01] What can you do on a macro-level?

  • Look at your company’s hiring practices and ensure that you do not make a hiring decision until you have a diverse set of candidates.
  • Actively have round tables at work to talk about the challenges you face around the topics of race and inclusion. If you do not feel comfortable, bring someone in to moderate this conversation.
  • Be more intentional about ensuring everyone has the opportunity to be promoted.
  • Openly discuss what conscious and unconscious bias looks like.
  • Look at your executive team and board; is there diversity?

[10:02 - 16:05] How Prioritizing Diversity and Psychological Safety Can Make You A Great Leader

  • These should be every leader’s top priority:
    • Diversity
    • Psychological security
  • How just by having a conversation can be a really powerful thing
